The member companies of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) have been working for more than two years to help ensure that U.S. climate policy is successful in both reducing GHG emissions and addressing the cost concerns of consumers.

In January 2009, EEI member companies endorsed a climate change framework that calls for an 80-percent reduction in GHG emissions below current levels by 2050, together with a series of actions to help reduce electricity cost increases to consumers.

The framework builds upon the climate change principles that EEI's Board of Directors adopted In February 2007. The principles committed EEI to supporting the concept of mandatory federal legislation capping carbon emissions. The 2007 framework emphasized the importance of developing and using a full range of climate-friendly technologies, as well as including a series of measures to help reduce cost increases to electricity customers.
