In 1994, the electric power industry and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) created the Climate Challenge program. This government-industry partnership eliminated 237 million metric tons of CO2 in the year 2000 alone. Power sector actions comprised about 70 percent of the total reductions and offsets reported to the government that year.
Through Climate Challenge, more than 650 electric companies participated in a diverse portfolio of voluntary climate actions.
